Becoming a Board Member

My name is SherryAnn Hoogland, and my family and I operate Majak Meadows Ranch, a small, first-generation ranch in Central Alberta. Like many producers, our operation has been shaped by curiosity, hard-earned experience, and a commitment to continuous improvement. I currently serve as a director with the Central Alberta Forage and Livestock Association (CAFLA), a role that has been both professionally rewarding and personally meaningful.

Our first experience with CAFLA was as members, participating in workshops, seminars, tours, and events. These opportunities were invaluable in helping us step back and look at the whole picture of our ranching operation—beyond day-to-day tasks and toward a more resilient, continuously improving approach to forage management and production goals. At the time, we had limited experience in forage production and roughly 15 years of livestock management. CAFLA provided access to consultation support, strong networking opportunities, and, just as importantly, a community of like-minded producers willing to share knowledge and learn together.

As our involvement grew, so did our appreciation for the organization’s impact. During my time on the board, CAFLA has continued to evolve in meaningful ways, including offering soil sampling and forage sampling packages and so much more. These practical supports reflect CAFLA’s commitment to helping producers build high-functioning, optimized operations and to supporting progress at every stage of experience.

When the opportunity to join the board was presented to me, I took time to reflect. I was mindful of the fact that we are a small operation and first-generation ranchers, what could I bring to the table was my first thought. Ultimately, I recognized that thoughtful leadership benefits from a range of perspectives and lived experience. I joined the board with a willingness to contribute, to learn, and to represent producers who are actively building and evolving their operations—and I am very glad I did.

Strong governance is central to the success of an organization, and it is a responsibility I take seriously. As a board, our role is not in day-to-day operations but in strategic planning, sound decision-making, and oversight that supports the long-term success, resilience, and continued evolution of CAFLA. This includes financial stewardship, clear policy direction, and ensuring the organization remains future-focused and responsive to member needs.

What makes this work especially meaningful is the people. I am proud to serve alongside a dedicated group of directors and staff who bring integrity, professionalism, and genuine care to their roles. It is a respectful, engaged team that understands both the challenges and opportunities facing agriculture today.

I am grateful to be part of CAFLA—as a producer, a director, and a member of this community. Serving on the board has reinforced the importance of building organizations and operations that are not just maintained, but well-governed, adaptive, and positioned to thrive into the future. For those considering involvement, I would encourage you to step forward. Your experience, your voice, and your willingness to serve truly matter.
